Tall Grass
Prairie
The Tall Grass Prairie is one of the most fertile
lands in the world: it is also one of the flattest.
Once the bottom of an ancient glacial lake, silt
and sediment levelled any pre-existing relief. After
the last ice age the fertile land of the Tall Grass
Prairie became a vast sea of wildflowers and grasses.
Today the region is highly productive agricultural
land with remnants of Tall Grass species found along
the trail. The little relief found on the plain comes
from the Red River that flows north on the prairie’s
eastern edge. The Trail crosses the prairie along
the international border and the eastern side of
the Red River.
Whether you choose to spend an afternoon
exploring nature and getting some exercise, or a
cycling trip
following the Trans Canada Trail, this site will
serve to assist you in organizing your outing.
