Heritage Resource Guide

The Crow Wing Trail Association is very proud to launch its first official resource guide for the entire Crow Wing Trail.  Funding for the development was provided by Manitoba Heritage, Culture, Tourism and Sport through the Heritage Grants Advisory Council.

The Crow Wing Heritage Resource Guide has been developed to be used in conjunction with the Tall Grass Prairie interpretive map.  The emphasis of the guide is on discovery of the history of the trail, the lifestyle of those who used it and its importance to the development of our fledgling nation. Of special interest to trail users is that most of the sites referred to in the guide have been given GPS coordinates to help make the adventure more interesting.

The Crow Wing Heritage Resource guide, divides the trail into three sections: (1) the northern section is from St. Norbert Heritage Park to Otterburne, (2) the middle section is from Otterburne to St. Malo, (3) the southern section is from St. Malo to Emerson at the U.S. border.

This resource, available in both english and french, is intended to be used as a teaching guide and may be reproduced without permission.

A remaining challenge for the Crow Wing is the connection to the Winnipeg section of the Trans Canada Trail. Although the route through the Floodway has been determined, due to the current construction of the Floodway Expansion Project this portion of trail remains off limits to trail users. The temporary northern end of the Crow Wing is located at the corner of Richardson (off PTH 200) and Schapansky Roads. It is expected that construction will be completed in conjunction with the opening of the new Duff Roblin Provincial Park.

The Crow Wing trail offers unlimited opportunities for nature lovers, birders, artists, historians, photographers, cyclists and explorers. Our trails are as varied as the multicultural makeup of our region. Trail surfaces vary between dirt, grass, gravel and asphalt.

Check Crow Wing maps for more details.

New! Looped Trail Maps!

Don't have time to walk the 191 km trail? Four community maps using Crow Wing Trail access points have been developed to include directions to short looped walks along with topics of interest. This enables trail users to start and end in the same place.

Before You Set Out

Make sure to dress properly for both current and expected weather conditions.

If hiking, plan on at least one hour for every six kilometers of trail you plan to travel.

Don’t forget to pack enough food and water for expected time on trail, small first aid kit, sunscreen, insect repellant.

Be Aware - While on the Trail

November is deer hunting season. If traveling the trail at this time of year remember to wear bright coloured clothing.

Some earthen sections of the trail can become very muddy following a big rain.

Several types of wildlife may be present on the trail, especially in the rural areas, walking sticks may be prudent.

Farm machinery sometime use the roads of the trail, especially during spring seeding and fall harvest. Farm machines always have the right of way.
